Simple things, like finding the perfect Sand Flea to use as bait make me happy. I’m not even very good at it, but discovering your own bait is a lot more satisfying than using a load of store-frozen malarkey. Even when the fishing is slow you can stay active in the perfect Outer Banks weather. Interspersed with appropriately regular liquid refreshments, of course.
We have reluctantly returned from Outer Banks where a fantastic long weekend was had. Both driving down at 6am and returning on Wednesday after Memorial day also in the morning turned out to be master strokes, with 0 traffic either way and we made the trip home in 4 hours even driving the truck. Unheard of, must have been doing 80 most of the way, pretty sweet. Anyway we’ll probably not be back down to NC until later on in the year so in the meantime it’s time to get the head down at work and plan out some camping / fishing adventures outside of work. It’s also time to get back with the program with some serious fat shredding circuits and cardio because that’s what summer is for. Hopefully every weekend can be spent outside from now on.
If you have any great camping suggestions near water in the area, please let me know! At the moment we’re considering the Rapha..er.. Rafpher- ah. Raphpaphaaph.. damnit.. Rappahannock River for our next adventures. Seems like a good time to try out the Roof Top Tent and awning, while canoeing or tubing the days away.. The blurb about Rappahannock River Campground Accommodations reads pretty well to me.
The campground is located near the famous Civil War Battlefields of Chancellorsville, Wilderness, and Fredericksburg, several vineyards, and some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in Virginia. We offer 45 primitive campsites on 51 acres bordering the beautiful Rappahannock River. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and stone-ringed campfire pit. The camp store has camping, canoeing, and fishing supplies for sale or rent. Firewood is available. Hot showers are centrally located. Other amenities include a stocked pond, volleyball, horseshoes, and short hiking trails. Canoeing and Kayaking: The Rappahannock & the Rapidan Rivers have something for everyone, with sections suitable for beginners to advanced. Trips range from a few hours to four days. Tubing: Our tubing trip features class I and II rapids, takes about 4 hours.
Sold. When can we come?
Please enjoy photo montage thingy of our recent trip to the Outer Banks! We had a great time and can’t wait to go back again. It was awesome to actually use the FJ for something off-road for once and I’m looking forward to getting it muddy as well as sandy. The sand can certainly be more of a challenge than I had anticipated once you get back from the easy hard-packed stuff on the beach. Good stuff!
It’s always difficult to go bare minimum when shopping at Wegmans for tasty things to grill. We said we wouldn’t pack too much and pick up some more stuff when we get down to the Outer Banks instead but damn it, Wegmans items are full of Win. Landjaeger Hunter’s trail sausages with red wine, Bacon and Cheddar / Blue Cheese Butchers’ Burgers, Marinaded Sirloin Steaks, Chicken/Peppers/Onions/Mushrooms for Kebobs, Jalapeno and Cayenne Cheese, A case of Domaine et Chandon cheapy guzzling bubbly and yeah, I think that’s a fair idea of what we’ve got in store. I did manage to decline the seasoned kebob skewers at $8 for 4 though, what a rip!
Going to throw some clothes in a bag, hit the bookstore for some good reads to bury myself in down there and then we’re all set. Also going to see if there’s a way I can Blackberry to a Blog while I’m down there. Probably not, but ahh there’s always beloved twitpic. This is assuming there’s a Edge signal down there but I’m not going to be trying too hard to find one. If I can’t, see you in a week.
